Wayne Meyers Transplant Web Site

Waiting and hoping

On the transplant list- November 2000

Wayne Meyers is a living 61-year-old contradiction. He can be caring and loving, and he can be brutally honest. He can be energetic and fun loving, and he can be a staunch couch potato. He can make you want to hug him for days, and he can make you want to strangle him. While generally appearing to be healthy as a horse, he can still be in need of a heart transplant.

Wayne had a massive heart attack in early 1989, with a second one following several years later. He has worked hard over the past 10-12 years to maintain the rest of his health and not to further compromise his damaged heart. He ate right, he exercised, and he tried to make sure he listened to his multitude of doctors - with probably a 90% success rate on the listening part. Wayne has also relied on God's grace and the prayers of family and friends to keep him going forward.

He has undergone numerous medical procedures - bypass surgery, installation of a defibulator and hospital stays too numerous to count. But we have come to the point where he needs more. His only hope to prolong his life now is a transplant.

Wayne is patiently waiting (well maybe not all that patiently) to be called for a heart transplant.

That is where we need your help. First and foremost we need your prayers. Prayers can be some of the strongest medicine on earth. However prayers cannot pay the staggering bills that are produce by this type of process. There is not only the huge hospital bills, but the after transplant medicine costs alone are enormous. Wayne will need several thousand dollars a month to pay for his prescriptions. His insurance will pay part of the cost, but the balance will be up to the family.

Friends have been conducting local fund-raisers since Wayne was put on the active transplant list almost a year ago, but still have only raised enough to cover a small percentage of his estimated $3000 a month prescription bill that his insurance will not cover.

In order to help with Wayne's medical costs we have established a fund in his name with NTAF (National Transplant Assistance Fund). The NTAF, a non-profit organization, will serve as trustee for the fund. All 501(c) 3 tax-deductible donations are made directly to and disbursed by NTAF for heart transplant related expenses only. NTAF will match the first $1000.00 we raise with a one time only grant. This means we will be most grateful for any help you can give, no donation is too small.

We hope this web site will let you get to know Wayne and his family a little better, and will give you the opportunity to get some more information about the NTAF and other transplant information.
